Did you have to call MBNA to request the cheque? Or do they send it automatically once the cash back balance is over $50?

Nope, no need to call, its automatic. They send in $50 Cheque increments and rest moves forward.

I went through the application process through the phone and cited the promo code.
My card came in the mail and it is called "Platinum Plus Premier Rewards". The card is pearly white with a silver strip on the left hand side. Is this the right card?

It should have the words written on the card "Smart Cash Card".

It is a platium plus card, but it should have those words on the card, if not, call MBNA.

We currently have a GM VISA and a Mosaik Air Miles MC with BMO but it seem pretty clear that this "Smart Cash Card" would be a worthwhile addition to our family's financial tools. Before I call in to apply I would like to know how it works with multiple cards in the same family? That is for myself and my wife would MBNA issue the two Smart Cash cards with different #s or the same # and would the rewards accumulate together?

(Together we spend about $1200 per month on gas and groceries).

Thanks for your advice.

You can get 2 cards in two different ways:

1) You Apply for Smart Cash Card and upon activation of the card, you ask MBNA to add a co-user to the account and they mail an additional card. This 2nd card will have the exact same Credit card numbers as the first and the same rules will still apply. ie 3% (5% for 1st 6 months) up to a maximum of $600 (not per card, but for the entire account) on gas/groceries, 1% on everything else.

2) You Apply for Smart Cash Card. Your wife applys on her own for her Smart Cash Card. MBNA will send two different Smart Cash Cards as they are different accounts owned by two different people. This way you have $600 maximum per Card (well per Account). You could further ask for co-user cards on each account incase you reach the maximum of $600 gas/groceries on one account and wish to help the spouse get $600 on the other.

What might be a better idea is if you apply first. After the 1st 6 months are done, ask your Spouse to apply for hers, this way if you dont really spend $1200/month on gas/groceries, you could instead maximize $600 at 5% over 12 months.

Then I sugget you both open a separate account becasue a joint account will have a limit of 600$ on your 5%/3% reward bonus before going back to the 1%. So let's say you have 2 cards connected on the same account and you spend $1200, you will only get 5% on the first $600 and you will get 1% on the 2nd $600. If you have 2 separate card on different account names/numbers. You try to split the cost over the 2 cards to get 5% on the first $600 on your card and the second $600 will get 5% on your wife's card.

A little more troubes to pay 2 bills but you make $24 extra (4% of $600) on the first 6 months whn you have the 5$ rewards and then you make an extra $12 per month when the rewards fall down to 3% following the first 6 months.

Hope that helps

Max

Edit: Sorry, djino had already answered but I had not refreshed my page for an hour or so. I think his advice is the best. Good luck!

My mattress is far more comfy with all my money under it.

Thanks guys for the replies. Do we still think one can obtain this particular card directly even if one isnt currenty an MBNA card holder?

This card is for new and existing MBNA clients. If a MBNA rep tells you otherwise, just hang up and callback.

Unfortunately, MBNA's customer service isn't the best. They told you 2 weeks, they said the same to me, but it took 1 day less a month for me to receive mine. You really need to babysit the process. You could call in a week and a Rep will say you have yet to be approved, and will be able to approve you on the spot.

My advice, callback in a few days to check on its status. And then call at least twice a week until you recieve it.

Yup, its automatically activated. Just keep it in your wallet, and tap your wallet on the paypass reader the next time you visit Petro Canada, Tim Hortons, Loblaws, etc.

NOTE: If you can use this method to pay at the pump at Petro Canada stations, Petro Canada will hold $100 if you pay at the pump (anywhere from 3-7 days) until the correct gas charge amount is applied.

I heard they do hold $100 even at Ultramar when you use the far away pump that only accept prepay credit cards payment.

I used to always go at Ultrama because I shared a conjoint credit card with my girlfriend, the National Bank Ultramar Mastercard. They gave 2% cashback, nothing compared to the new 5% I get anywhere :D

My mattress is far more comfy with all my money under it.

I'm a student (19 yrs old) who has a part-time job and i have no clue what my credit rating/score is since my parents have always took care of my finance stuff. Although I do believe I have a car purchase under my name (co-signed). Also I have a mastercard but it is hooked up to my mom's account… how do i go about getting the smart cash card? Should i just call them and simply ask them i'd like a new card and would like to apply for the smart cash card? or do I have to get another card (Platinum Plus) and then upgrade?

Thanks guys

This question was answered in this thread, but yes, you can do either as a new or existing MBNA Client. Though you have to call them, you cant apply online for this card. You can ask them to upgrade an existing account, or apply for for this in addition to the MBNA card you already have (I have 4 MBNA accounts myself as mentioned in this thread). You also have the option of telling MBNA to apply for new credit (in addition to the credit they've given you for your existing account) or decrease the credit from your existing account to use for the Smart Cash Card. Just know applying for new credit means Credit Hit and they could decline you in the end.

Thanks djino. My wife was 'worried' about losing such a feature. In fact we will keep our existing MC as there are some big ticket purchases we made in the past year or so for which we want to maintain this extra warranty.
